Shouts of protecting patient healthcare information echo off every corner of the healthcare space, though frequently when it comes to protected health information (PHI) leaks we assume they come from network breaches, electronic health record misuse, laptop losses, or errant fax destinations. What we rarely consider are the medical devices we utilize in every day practice that store a great deal of PHI, such as mobile diagnostic machines like ultrasounds, ECGs, and portable digital imaging platforms. Devices that require entering definitive patient identification information such as name, date of birth, medical record number, maybe even social security; and that subsequently store hundreds or even thousands of studies with this information continuously attached. In this episode we discuss the importance of considering these devices and furthermore steps to securing the data they contain.
